What the job involves
- First fix: roof carcassing, stud walls, floor joists, door linings and window boards on new builds.
- Second fix: hanging doors, fitting skirting and architrave, staircases, kitchens and ironmongery.
- Refurbishment and repair of existing buildings, often working to a snag list.
- Reading drawings and setting out, then working safely at height and with power tools on site.
The official Level 2 standard describes the trade as working with wood-based materials to create and install building components - partitions, doors, staircases, window frames, mouldings, timber floor coverings, floor joists and roofs (Skills England, ST0264, accessed 01-Oct-2026). The National Careers Service lists typical hours of 40 to 45 a week, with some evenings and weekends (National Careers Service, accessed 01-Oct-2026).
Skills and qualifications employers ask for
- Accurate measuring, marking out and cutting to drawings.
- Safe use of hand tools, power tools and site plant.
- A Level 2 or Level 3 carpentry and joinery qualification (NVQ or apprenticeship). In England the apprenticeship routes are the Level 2 Carpentry and joinery standard (ST0264), with a site carpenter or architectural joiner option (Skills England, accessed 01-Oct-2026), and the Level 3 Craft carpentry and joinery standard (ST0263) (Find apprenticeship training, accessed 01-Oct-2026).
- A CSCS card. The Blue Skilled Worker card needs a construction-related NVQ/SVQ Level 2 (or SCQF level 5) or a completed apprenticeship; the Gold card needs NVQ/SVQ Level 3 (or SCQF level 6). Both need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test passed within the last two years (CSCS Blue, CSCS Gold, accessed 01-Oct-2026).
- A full driving licence and your own tools are asked for in many adverts.

Pay
Carpenters and joiners are one ONS pay group (SOC 2020 code 5316), so there is no separate official figure for carpenters. In April 2025 the median for full-time employees in the group was £34,014 a year, £678.70 a week, or £17.04 an hour, before tax (ONS, ASHE 2025 provisional, Table 14, accessed 01-Oct-2026). ASHE covers employees only, so it does not include self-employed carpenters.
On sites that use the Construction Industry Joint Council (CIJC) Working Rule Agreement - negotiated between employers and the Unite and GMB unions - the minimum craft rate is £16.40 an hour (£639.60 for a 39-hour week) from 20 July 2026 (CISRS; GMB, accessed 01-Oct-2026). Not every employer uses the CIJC agreement, and self-employed day rates vary by region and specialism, so check each advert.
How to get in and move up
- Apprenticeship (Level 2, then Level 3) with a builder or joinery firm.
- College course plus site experience as a trainee or carpenter's mate. While you are registered for a qualification you can apply for a CSCS Trainee card (CSCS Trainee, accessed 01-Oct-2026).
- With experience, move to site supervisor or construction project manager, or into estimating, heritage restoration or facilities maintenance (National Careers Service, accessed 01-Oct-2026).
Questions people ask
Do I need a CSCS card to work as a carpenter? On most construction sites, yes. The National Careers Service says you need a CSCS card or equivalent to train and work on a construction site (National Careers Service, accessed 01-Oct-2026). Which card you get depends on your qualification: Trainee while you are registered for one, Blue at Level 2, Gold at Level 3 (CSCS, accessed 01-Oct-2026).
What is the difference between a carpenter and a joiner? The official Level 2 standard splits them: a site carpenter prepares and installs building components such as doors, straight staircases and wall and floor units, and erects structural carpentry and roofs on a building site, while an architectural joiner works in a workshop making doors, windows and straight staircases with their ironmongery (Skills England, ST0264, accessed 01-Oct-2026). Many adverts use the words together. See joiner jobs.
Can I become a carpenter without an apprenticeship? Yes. The National Careers Service lists a college course (for example site carpentry, bench joinery or a T Level in On Site Construction) as an alternative to an apprenticeship (National Careers Service, accessed 01-Oct-2026). Many people then build site experience as a trainee or carpenter's mate and complete an NVQ on the job.
